December 25, 2011 - Karachi - The Information Minister of Pakistan, Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan, quit her position as a cabinet member on Sunday. In a moment of high drama, Awan announced her resignation in Karachi during a meeting of the Federal Cabinet in Karachi chaired by Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani. That meeting was being broadcast on live television.

"Federal Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan announced that she is going to resign," reports DunyaNews.com, "because she considers that she is ineligible for the post."

NDTV reports that Awan spoke to the premier during the meeting and said, "While endorsing your leadership, I don't think I can continue as a member of the cabinet. With your permission, I would like to submit my resignation." She only said that considers herself inelible to hold the post but did not give specific reasons, says DunyaNews.com.

An earlier report today from TheNews.com.pk said that Dr. Firdous warned fellow Pakisanis - especially those in power - that the democratic voting process must not be tampered with. "Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan has reiterated the warning that any dirty game played with the democratic setup in the name of democracy will cause irreparable loss to the democratic system in the country," reported TheNews. The report said that she made that statement in a press conference "after inaugurating a new block of Anjuman Hamait-e-Islam Dar-ul-Shafqat on Saturday. She said general elections would be held on scheduled time and political change should be brought into the country only by the public vote."

A Samaa.tv staff report says that the surprise move by Awan is mysterious. "It is difficult to say anything about this latest resignation of Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan," it said, "but it is being guessed by the analysts that there is something extra ordinary hidden behind this sudden move. One opinion says that it is possible that she might had some publicly unknown differences with the leadership and today she made it public with her resignation."
